The hydroton clay pebbles are made of fired clay, containing many honeycomb micro-pores that can absorb moisture. When the air is moderately low, the moisture on the soil's surface tends to evaporate. Placing leca balls on the pot's surface can effectively slow down the rate of water evaporation.

The loose structure of the hydroponic clay pebbles growing media and its internal voids facilitate soil permeability, getting rid of excess acidity, preventing plant decay, and protecting the fragile roots of plants. When hydro balls are placed at the bottom of the pot as a drainage layer, they promote drainage and increase the breathability inside the pot.
